FC Flora – The Story of Estonia’s Football Giant
The most successful club in Estonian football history, FC Flora is always among the favorites to win the Meistriliiga, Estonian Cup, or SuperCup. Founded in 1990 in the capital city, Tallinn, it quickly became a force to be reckoned with in domestic football. FC Flora Tallinn counts not just as one of the strongest football brands in Estonia, but across all Baltic nations. Its white and green colors have become synonymous with Meistriliiga, as Tallinn FC Flora has the most championship titles of any club in the competition. And there’s more: it’s the only Estonian football club to achieve success on the international stage.
FC Flora History – From the Club’s Foundation to the Top of Estonian Football
The first definitive date in FC Flora history is March 10th, 1990. It is the date when the club was founded – only a year before the restoration of national independence. Aivar Pohlak, the club’s founder, created a new team using Tallinn’s youth football organization, Tallinna Lõvid (Tallinn Lions), as a foundation. Since that first team, Pohlak and FC Flora Tallinn have remained focused on attracting and developing young, native Estonian football talent.
You wouldn’t know how storied the club's history would be based on its first season. The club participated in the Estonian SSR Football Championship and finished last, earning relegation. However, after the end of the Soviet occupation and the formation of Meisterliiga, Flora football club and its bet on developing young talent started showing the first signs of future greatness. In the Meisterliiga’s first season, the club finished 4th, improving the next season, 1992/1993, by finishing runner-up. It was the next year and season that became historic for the club – the league’s leading team got disqualified, which led to Flora and Norma, teams that shared the second spot with an equal number of points, playing a unique decisive match. Flora won 5–2 and earned their first trophy – out of many. While FC Flora has never been a favorite in the Champions League betting, they’ve also competed on an international level in European competitions.
Over the following years, Flora will win 16 Meisterliiga titles, the most of any team in the tournament. The team’s idea of developing new players and thus – Estonian football itself – was reflected in its name, logo and strategy. This translated into one of Estonia's biggest football academies, operating under the club’s brand. And the name, of course, comes from Flora – a Greek goddess of nature and growth, represented on the team’s logo and in its colors – green and white. The latter became the source of the team’s nickname – Rohevalged, which literally means “Green-and-Whites”.
Championship Titles and FC Flora’s Greatest Achievements
There’s no end to FC Flora achievements on the national level – they have the most impressive trophy collection in the country. It includes not only the Meistriliiga championships but also the Estonian Cup and Supercup, including several trebles (winning all three trophies in a single season).
The list of FC Flora titles the club has won as of 2026 includes:
Title | Number of times won |
Meistriliiga / Premium Liiga (Estonian Championship) | 16 |
Estonian Cup | 8 |
Estonian Super Cup | 12 |
FC Flora in European Football and UEFA Competitions
European competitions are packed with tough participants. Estonian clubs often seemed to draw the short end of the stick when earning qualification spots. Still, Flora has consistently earned a spot in the qualifiers and has built experience since the 90s. But as a relatively new club focused primarily on the domestic scene, it hasn’t had much success.
The pivotal moment came in the 2020s – specifically, in the 2020/2021 season. FC Flora European competitions that year started with a qualifying match with Hibernians, the Maltese champions – and the Rohevalged came out on top. Unfortunately, subsequent matches against Legia Warsaw and Omonia from Cyprus weren’t as successful. However, the team was rerouted to the new European competition starting that year – the UEFA Conference League – and given a chance to earn its spot in the group competition. The only obstacle was Shamrock Rovers, an Irish club, which Flora decisively beat 5:2. This marked the first time it (or, for instance, any Estonian club) qualified for the group stage of a major European tournament.
FC Flora Conference League group included Cypriot Anorthosis, Belgian Gent, and Serbian Partisan. The club managed to earn draws against Anorthosis and dramatically beat Partisan – a historic first victory on such a level for an Estonian team. While it didn’t manage to earn the spot in the next stage, FC Flora UEFA journey that year has proven that Baltic clubs can compete on par with famous European teams – and win.
Famous Players in FC Flora History
The mastery of its individual footballers often influenced the club’s success. Many Flora players have become among the biggest stars in Estonian football history, finding international success and building tremendous careers. Among them are:
Mart Poom. One of the most celebrated Estonian players in history. The goalkeeper began his career among fellow FC Flora players before moving to the English Premier League.
Raio Piiroja. He commanded Flora’s defense for years before moving to Norwegian Fredrikstad. Served as a National Team captain and is one of Estonia's most renowned footballers.
Rauno Sappinen. Was one of the most famous modern FC Flora Tallinn players, top goalscorer of the 2025 season, and an author of Flora's most high-profile international goals – against Partisan and Shamrock Rovers. Multiple winner of the Estonian Player of the Year award. This season plays for Olympiakos Nicosia.
Flora vs Levadia – Tallinn’s Great Football Rivalry
A single rivalry often determines the fate of each Meistriliiga season, Estonian Cup and Supercup. It is the competition between two Tallinn clubs – Flora vs Levadia. The two most successful and powerful teams in Estonian football history share the home arena, the most titles, and even the kit colors, but they couldn’t be more different.
Flora focuses on locally developed players, while FCI Levadia relies on legionnaires. Flora started in 1990 and struggled to gain a foothold at first, while the other entered the league in 1998 and immediately went to the championship. Levadia vs Flora is always the biggest spectacle of the season. 2021, for example, when the clubs clashed in the final tour of the season, a late equalizer from Levadia snatched them the championship. However, Flora responded in the following season, when their 2:1 victory over Levadia paved the way to an overall season victory. The Tallinn derby always delivers one of the season's most intense matches– and will provide exciting football betting options and spectacle in the years to come.
FC Flora Today – Team, Players and Goals
Today, after a couple of years of setbacks following the departure of the team’s star coach, Jürgen Henn, FC Flora is back in the saddle. They’ve won the latest Meistriliiga season under the leadership of the club’s former player, Konstantin Vassiljev, and continue to use the team’s preferred, dynamic style of play with high pressing and rapid transitions.
All FC Flora players are Estonian footballers; most have grown and developed in the club’s own system. The club’s current top goalscorer is Sander Alamaa, who boosts Flora’s offense when needed and is known for his sharp, tactical finishing. The team’s leader and captain, Rauno Sappinen, supports him as the other forward. Other notable players include winger Sergei Zenjov and playmakers Danil Kuraksin and Vladislav Kreida.
FC Flora Women’s Team and Football Academy
Founded first as an exclusively professional men’s team, Flora has expanded over the years across every level of Estonian sport. The women’s squad is as successful and dominant as the men’s, holding every record in Naiste Meistriliiga. Notable FC Flora women players include Mari Liis Lillemäe, Lisette Tammik, and Kelly Rosen, who have consistently demonstrated their prowess at both the club and national level.
But the club's biggest achievement is its development system – the FC Flora academy. One of the country's biggest and most successful youth development organizations, it was founded to help young Estonian players progress and realize their potential.
A. Le Coq Arena and FC Flora Fans
The club’s home is A. Le Coq Arena – the biggest football arena in Estonia, which hosts both of the country's biggest clubs and serves as the home ground for Estonia’s national team. FC Flora Stadium has a capacity of over 14.000 fans and is located in central Tallinn. In 2018, it hosted the European Super Cup between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Flora Tallinn stadium is, of course, home to FC Flora fans! Loud, supportive and active, the Rohevalged support squad is one of the most notable in Estonia.
